| The MASC scholarship gave me the means to undertake the Marine
Affairs Program (MAP) at Dalhousie and bridge the gaps in the skills I required before
returning to Marine Conservation work in Eastern Africa. The Dalhousie program and support
from MASC provided me with an opportunity to pick a strategic project that allowed me to
engage an area of work prior to getting to East Africa. When I did finally return, I was
able to hit the ground running. Much of policy and community based management issues
I am now able to engage in and have grown into have result from the skills and knowledge I
gained from the program. I will always be grateful to MASC and MAP for this. - Hussein Alidina - MASC Scholarship Recipient 2003-2004, Dalhousie University The Maritime Awards Society of Canada (MASC) changed my life! Receiving the scholarship to undertake graduate studies through the Marine Affairs Program (MAP) at Dalhousie University enabled me to obtain a Masters in Marine Management (MMM) degree. More so, the studies introduced me to a world of knowledge and experience that continues to shape my life. Throughout my studies I mainly focused on Canada's Third Ocean and was able to examine this unique circumpolar situation from various interdisciplinary fields. As I continue working on Arctic Ocean issues, the MASC aids in my tasks by providing valuable workshops, forums, and the all-important intellectual guidance. Not enough can be said of this valuable institution that I am honored to now be a member of. Thank you MASC for everything...you truly changed my life! - Esther Cunningham - MASC Scholarship Recipient 2003 - 2004, Dalhousie University My experience in
the Marine Affairs Program with the financial support from the MASC scholarship was truly
fantastic. Upon finishing my undergraduate degree I was not sure what direction I wanted
to take but the interdisciplinary nature of the MAP program was exactly what I needed to
expand my horizons, obtain numerous academic opportunities, industry networking, practical
learning experiences, while learning with a diverse collection of people from all over the
world. This program and MASC provided me with a wonderful basis that I always keep in my
mind even as I currently pursue my Ph.D. in Oceanography. Keeping a realistic perspective
as to how science can (and should) shape and inform policy is extremely important to me,
as well as the ability to work with the fishing industry in creating solutions to many of
the problems and concerns that affect rural fishing communities today. |
