| With a view to broadening the
interest and membership in the society, as well as to increase general
public awareness of maritime affairs and oceans issues, it was decided
in 1994 to initiate a series of public fora and workshops. The first of
these was mounted in 1995 and a second a year later, both at the
University of Victoria. Subsequently, through workshops beginning in
2000 MASC has become recognized by governments and industry as an
apolitical organization with the capacity to organize and promote
expert interaction and public debate on current topics of major
maritime importance. In addition to those already conducted, a number
of topics are on the MASC calendar for workshops/forums in the future.
